Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, the world’s tallest free-standing mountain, requires proper preparation—and having the right gear can significantly improve your comfort, safety, and chances of reaching the summit.
Hiking Boots
Choose high-quality boots with strong ankle support and Vibram or equivalent soles. Waterproof Gore-Tex lining is recommended for wet and cold conditions. Break in your boots at least four weeks before the trek. Don’t forget a spare pair of laces.
Sunglasses
Opt for sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Wrap-around frames with side shields help reduce glare and block peripheral light effectively.
Day Pack (30L)
A well-fitted pack with hydration compatibility, padded straps, hip/chest belts, and water bottle pockets is ideal. Internal frame designs offer better weight distribution.
Waterproof Jacket & Pants
Your outer layer should be breathable and fully waterproof (Gore-Tex preferred), with seam-sealed construction. A hooded jacket is essential for warmth, and waterproof pants with ankle zippers are critical for summit day.
Waterproof Gloves or Mittens
Insulated gloves or mittens with wrist cords and reinforced palms are a must. Look for options with removable liners for ease of drying.
Duffel Bags (x2)
Bring two large duffel bags: one stays at your hotel with extra items; the other will be carried by porters during the trek.

Note: Avoid cotton, excessive footwear, and bulky sweatshirts. Choose quick-drying, performance fabrics.
